Improving Existing Jigs: When Should You Repair Them and When Should You Design a New One?
During production, a JIG may become worn, lose accuracy, or no longer be suitable for a new product. In such cases, companies often need to choose between improving the existing JIG and designing a new one.
When Should You Improve an Existing JIG?
Improvement is a suitable option when:
- The overall JIG structure is still in good condition.
- Only some components are worn or damaged.
- The product has only minor changes in dimensions or positions.
- You want to reduce setup time and operator workload.
- The existing frame and components can be reused.
Common improvement items include positioning pins, stoppers, clamping mechanisms, cylinders, mounting plates, and guide bushings.
When Should You Design a New JIG?
A new JIG should be considered when:
- The JIG frame is deformed or seriously deteriorated.
- The product has undergone major changes in dimensions or structure.
- Almost the entire positioning and clamping system needs to be changed.
- The improvement cost is close to the cost of manufacturing a new JIG.
- The existing JIG can no longer meet the required accuracy or productivity.
Repair or Replace?
There is no single solution that is suitable for every case. Before making a decision, companies should evaluate the condition of the JIG, the extent of product changes, improvement costs, and production requirements.
